The blessings are many when one walks with Christ. As the Light of the World, Christ dispels the fear, depression, loneliness and evil often associated with the dark of night. One of our country’s darkest times, The Civil War, is regarded to have heavily influenced the popular hymn. The composer, The greatest pursuit of man is that of knowing God. It is a pursuit that can only be attained by opening our heart, our whole heart, to Him. Our relationship with God is one of love – a conscientious and uncompromising love. When we open ourselves to God, seek His will with all our heart, he shall reveal Himself, granting us the peace, guidance, and wisdom of His love to fulfill His calling.
